What to expect

Joining is not a quick online sign-up: it is a chance for you and the lodge to get to know each other. From the first formal step to your initiation, the process typically takes three to six months.

  1. Get in touch. Email us and tell us a little about yourself and your interest in Freemasonry.
  2. Meet informally. The first few meetings don’t have to take place in a lodge building – they can be as informal as meeting a couple of the lodge members in a pub. This is your chance to ask questions, discuss your interest in Freemasonry, and get to know some of your future fellow Freemasons.
  3. Get to know the lodge. You may meet more of the members at social occasions, and you are welcome to join one of the free public tours of Freemasons’ Hall. The usual expectation is that at least one member of the lodge will have known you for a considerable amount of time, typically more than a year, before proposing you.
  4. Application and interview. A member proposes you and another seconds you, and you complete an application form. You will then meet a small group of senior lodge members for an informal interview.
  5. Proposal and ballot. Your name is proposed in open lodge, and the members vote by ballot on your admission.
  6. Initiation. Once the ballot is in your favour, you are initiated at a regular lodge meeting, and your journey as a Freemason begins.

Interested in another lodge?
